For those who are too young to remember, and for those who are too old to forget, this is what silent movies looked like when we attended screenings in the 1970’s. The professors and learned scholars who introduced the shows heaped copious praise upon the films’ brilliance, and then projected this garbage onto the matte-white screen, to our great bewilderment and disbelief. The professors and learned scholars had the audacity to tell us that this junk was good? What on earth were they smoking? We are fortunate that now, at long last, in our digital age, some archives and some distributors (not all by any means) are taking some care to display for us the filmmakers’ original intentions.
