Until now, ATGoA’s programming had been rather good, if a bit repetitious.
Then something happened.
Blatantly commercial features started to creep in.
A little more “adult fare” began to creep in.
When fresher films were unavailable, the old tried-and-true features were revived — again and again and again and again and again.
If I am reading between the lines correctly, the audience grew bored and kept away.
That led the ATGoA to try different programming, which, to all appearances, failed miserably.

The ATGoA had begun its slide down the slippery slope.
It had presented the occasional “adult” film in the past,
but now it decided to book sheer exploitation films of no interest to any serious filmgoer.
The problem would soon get worse.

Now we discover something fascinating, and I had not previously been aware of this.
Many underground films are now available on DVD, but in the 1960’s they were available only in private cineclubs in New York City
and other such places. Ira Jaffe
would soon begin presenting them in his UNM classes at least as early as the late 1970’s.
(We generally called professors by their first names, but I cannot imagine anyone calling him Ira.
We all referred to him only by his full name:
Ira Jaffe. Odd, that.
I never enrolled in his class, but I asked for the syllabi so that I could pay my way in when an interesting movie was on his screen
at the Rodey or at the SUB. Got to see some great stuff that way.
Here is his Fall 1977 schedule,
and his Fall 1979 schedule,
and his Spring 1980 schedule.
I used to have more than that, but, when I wasn’t looking, dear old daddy tossed nearly all my school papers into the trash —
everything he could find, kindergarten through senior year in college. Oh well.
I’m a born archivist, and he wasn’t. We never saw eye to eye on anything. Ever.)
Never had I guessed that “underground” cineclub films would have been presented at commercial cinemas, but they were!
Mike Getz, who managed the
Cinema Theatre at 1122 N. Western Ave in Hollywood CA,
agreed to move John Fles’s series to his cinema beginning at the midnight that ended Saturday, 12 October 1963 (Columbus Day).
He christened the series, “Movies ’Round Midnight.”
CONFESSION: This isn’t my research, not at all.
I’m swiping it from Mike Everleth’s article,
“Underground Cinema 12: Origin & August-September 1970,” Underground Film Journal, 20 January 2019.
Great resource!
He wrote a
So, to continue my swiping, Getz’s uncle was, hold your breath, Louis Sher!
A few (how many?) years later, Mike convinced Uncle Louie to present this same series,
now rechristened “Underground Cinema 12,” at all the Art Theatre Guild of America cinemas,
and Uncle Louis agreed.
That’s how this series ended up at Don Pancho’s.
According to Everleth’s article,
“Underground Cinema 12,” continued through at least sometime in 1972.
Mike Getz states that the series lasted until the late 1970’s, when the audiences got too rowdy and physically violent to endure any further.
For reasons unpublished, Don Pancho’s quit the series much earlier than that, at the end of 1968.
Perhaps the audience just grew weary and disappeared?
Oh crikey!
Look what I just found on WorthPoint!
It’s a little poster that was offered on eBay in 2017, and I didn’t notice!
Phooey!
Here it is:
The films were mostly 16mm, and that is certainly when Donald Pancho’s purchased that blasted
Bell & Howell Filmoarc and cut a porthole window into the tiny little door that led to the one-seat four-foot-high balcony.
Very poor
For the one or two of you who might find this of interest,
a few Underground Cinema 12 schedules are posted online:
August 1970 at the
Westwood in Lakewood, Ohio;
August through September 1970 at some cinema somewhere;
January through May 1971 at the
Art in Dayton, Ohio.
Here is a membership card
for the Valley Theatre in Tempe, Arizona;
and here’s one for the
Westwood Theatre in Toledo.

Take a look at the below advertisement.
We are now half-way down the slippery slope.
The ad was a deception.
In fact, the film was quite serious, it was in no way an exploitation item,
and its correct title was
Noite Vazia (Empty Night).
Anyone who intentionally booked a film with a false title and false advertising was asking for trouble.
The desperate DG’s who attended all surely slunk out the back door in shame,
for they did not get what they had paid for.
Why was the film given a deceptive title and deceptive advertising campaign?
Because it had flopped the first time two times around, and this was just a cheap way to earn back a few lost shekels.
Utterly shameless.
After writing the above musing, what do I discover but that it was Louis K. Sher’s company, Sherpix, that distributed this movie under this title!
Utterly shameless.

And that was the end of that.
The Art Theatre Guild of America, Inc., sold Don Pancho’s and never returned to Albuquerque.
Louis K. Sher by this time was 60 years old.

That was it.
On those three nights, the auditorium was at least half-full, probably more than half.
Perhaps I attended on the rare good nights?
Was business normally poor?
I do not know.
Did Sher simply decide that, now that he was not the only game in town, it was time to fold?
I do not know.
Sher’s Don Pancho’s had decided to war against The Guild by showing almost duplicate programming.
That was after having given up on the artsy stuff, then having given up on the | |
