A Few Cinemas in Albuquerque and Elsewhere

or, My Screaming Tirade

If you read my essay on Monty Python, you noticed that I griped about the unforgiveable cropping at all cinemas in Albuquerque. Ah, so now I’m thinking about Albuquerque. So now that I’m thinking about Albuquerque, why not tell some stories? On the off-chance that you are a historian who wishes to write about cinemas in Albuquerque, here’s some info you don’t even have to pay for. (But if you’re going to plunder any of this, at least have the courtesy to give me a footnote. Please?)

QUICK REFERENCE. The following table does not include every fly-by-night improvised space and improvised screen, nor does it include every classroom or any public-school auditorium, nor does it include every library auditorium or clubhouse or church or synagogue or private school, and it pretty much omits the porno houses and modern hotel conference rooms. Not a mention of Johnson Gym or Kiva Auditorium, either. Maybe someday I’ll fill in those gaps. As for stadiums, no, that’s a whole other topic. Ditto with dinner theatres; they are a whole different kettle of fish, outside my scope. As we all know, most of the buildings on the UNM campus are not on streets. As we all do not know, those buildings all have street addresses anyway!

Enough. 1979 is my limit. If it started after 1979, I won’t research it.
The loss of the third Crystal and the Elks’s Opera House is a tragedy.
The radical remodelings of the Sunshine and the KiMo constitute a crime.
The loss of the Fox Cinerama and Loew’s and the Cinema East is sad.
If Albuquerque could have kept only seven, these are the seven I would have chosen,
but we lost all of them.

Continue to Chapter One.
