This short documentary from the Canada Carries On series celebrates the contribution of Canada’s railroads to the war effort. The film includes a sequence from Buster Keaton’s 1926 silent comedy The General, as well as a re-enactment of Lord Strathcona driving the final spike into the Canadian Pacific Railway Line.
[The clips from The General were duped from a 16mm print, most likely the MoMA print.]

The film “The General” is considered by many to be Buster Keaton’s greatest film. Acrobatic, quirky, and quite amusing the 1927 piece still works today.

@danlefou The gun is an accurate copy of a Federal rail-mounted mortar called the “Dictator”, used in the siege of Petersburg, Virginia in 1864. It could fire a 13-inch shell two miles on 14 lb of powder!

The General is a famous artifact of the Civil War. A train pulled by the General was seized in 1862 by Union soldiers in Georgia, leading to a chase dramatized in the 1927 Buster Keaton silent movie “The General.” Information on that episode and the subsequent history of the locomotive is readily available on the web. Jean Shepherd played this audio recording on his program on WOR, New York City, October 11, 1973

Buster Keaton, Nat’l Archives, Wash., D.C. The General is what I like to call: The Greatest Movie Ever Made! Accompanying it at The National Archives in Washington, D.C. was an honor! When show time came I was jittery. The microphone was inside the piano. As a result, you don’t hear the audience very much. But Yes! I could hear them. You’ll probably see the picture flickering. That’s because the frame rate of a film print is not the same as the video camera. But the audience didn’t see any flickering. My policy about accompanying The General is if Buster Keaton is not on the screen the movie is serious, if he’s on it’s funny. Recorded music published previously with the reissued film has been excellent though it emphasizes what’s BIG about the movie, which to me suppresses what’s funny. Since the 1920s were the Jazz Age, I’ve gone for Hot Jazz here even though Jazz didn’t exist in the Civil War. For me, the energy, the momentum of the picture is Jazz.

Nitehawk Cinema, Buster Keaton’s THE GENERAL: A Live Music & Moving Images Event
Jan 5, 2012, running time 0:01:34
BUSTER KEATON plays engineer Johnnie Gray, a man with two loves: his trusty steam engine (The General) and his fiance Annabelle Lee. The General is stolen by Union spies with Annabelle on board, Johnnie procures another locomotive and the chase begins. The film is essentially one big chase sequence, brilliantly constructed and expanded to feature length. Within that framework Buster Keaton stages a series of beautifully choreographed and increasingly dangerous stunts. The General is an epic of silent comedy, one of the most expensive films of its time. It is equal parts farce, action flick and period piece. The General is consistently ranked among the greatest films ever made.
HAYES GREENFIELD and the ECLECTIC ELECTRIC will perform LIVE, providing a musical score and soundscape as fast and fresh as a locomotive. Hayes Greenfield is an award-winning film composer and musician living and working in New York City for over 30 years. As a film composer, Hayes has scored more than 60 films, documentaries, commercials, and TV specials. Many have received awards, including the prestigious Emmy and Telly. As performer/saxophonist, Hayes has released 10 critically acclaimed CD’s and toured throughout the US, Canada, and Europe with his own bands.
The Eclectic Electric marries extensive musical stylistic history of composition, film, improvisation, sound design, acoustic and electronic instruments and effects into a groundbreaking aural cornucopia that pushes the envelope of silent film and interpretive music and sound. The Eclectic Electric is comprised of Paul Socolow and Todd Turkisher.
Todd Turkisher plays drums, percussion and electronics. Among the hundreds of musicians he has played, toured, and recorded with include David Byrne, Ute Lemper, and African drum master Baba Olatunji. He performed on Selena’s “Dreaming of You,” and Baba Olatunji’s grammy nominated CD “Love Drum Talk”. Todd co-produced Ute Lemper’s last two CDs. He is currently writing and producing a new album featuring the words of Charles Bukowski, with melodic composition and voice by Ute Lemper.
Paul Socolow, bass, guitar and electronics was NYC born and raised. Paul has recorded and toured extensively with David Byrne, Bill Frisell, Bobby McFerrin, The Roches, Herbie Mann, Marc Ribot, Uri Caine, Gato Barbieri and countless others. His CD “Have Another Day”, recorded along with Todd Turkisher under the name Angry Man Breakfast, was roundly praised in the Music community and has sold worldwide.

elkriverharmonicas, The General - Full Movie w/ roots music soundtrack
Jul 4, 2012, running time 1:45:44
www.elkriverharmonicas.com
Buster Keaton, Hollywood’s first action hero - and a real one - who didn’t just pretend to defy death - he faced actual death with nearly ever crazy stunt in this movie.
Orsen Wells called this the greatest film ever made and for good reason. Not only is it incredible, but the effects are timeless - because they are not effects, they are real. Buster Keaton defied death numerous times with these dangerous stunts. This movie is in the public domain - in the for real public domain, not just like when people say something is in the public domain because it’s old. The background music is played by either me, my family or my friends.
I LOVE silent movies, always have. There’s this disconnect between modern society and the silent movie - thus some of the greatest movies ever made go unseen. How often do you see Metropolis, Intolerance, Birth of A Nation, The General or Nosferatu on television?
I’ve always thought that a major reason for this disconnect wasn’t necessarily the absence of spoken dialogue, but there’s nothing in the sounds heard that modern folks can relate to - I’m hoping that with a nice Southern roots soundtrack - that in my opinion totally fits the spirit of “The General” might improve that experience for some. This truly is one of the greatest movies ever made.
Buster Keaton had a great deal of control of the production of this movie and it cost 3/4 of a million dollars to make it. It was a box-office bomb - and because of that, Buster had to relinquish a lot of his control in future movies... it’s not the only truly great movie that bombed, it joins the ranks of Intolerance and Citizen Kane.
Jason Ricci’s contribution starts at 19:30.

Alessandro Fabbri, Lumiére - The General, Buster Keaton - live 2012
Sep 15, 2012, running time 0:09:30

@yelloweyes2 I enjoyed so much earing the people laugh with this masterpiece! Buster Keaton deserves all honors.

@Katchatiger Right said!

Cropped by about 25%, top, left, and bottom; the aperture is about .553"×.847" rather than .6796"×.90625", and the image is misframed, to boot.
Here, this isn’t exact, but it shows you what I mean:

This is why I almost never attend 35mm movies. This problem is ubiquitous, and in most 35mm cinemas it’s much worse than this.

Excerpts from the silent film classic “The General” starring Buster Keaton, with live organ accompaniment by organist Dean Lemire

Historic marquee lighting ceremony

It was an amazing night at the Hollywood Theatre!

_____________________(event promotion info)_________________
SOLD OUT!

To celebrate the installation of our new marquee, the Hollywood Theatre presented a 35mm screening of Buster Keaton’s THE GENERAL with live organ accompanied by Dean Lemire, performing his original score on the Wurlitzer pipe organ

(Thanks to the Columbia River Theater Organ Society.)

The crowds came out to marvel at the new marquee as well as experience an amazing film that was shot in Oregon and made the same year as the theatre was built, 1926! THE GENERAL is considered by critics to be one of the greatest films ever made -- and a live organ soundtrack will make it a cinematic experience not to be missed!

Organist Dean Lemire will be performing his original score live on the Hollywood Theatre’s mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ.

Nov 12, 2013, running time 0:01:13

@ZekPatterson Finally got around to catching this flick, I loved every second of it!
@Dallas-Nyberg You are right Chris.... I have this movie on DVD...a couple of years ago, my 12 yo daughter decided to watch it... I could hear her chuckling away at Buster's antics and she was totally immersed in the story. She became oblivious to the fact that it was a silent movie.
It is now one of favourite movies.
Once she had seen an “olden day” movie, she asked if I had any more.... I gave her my boxed set of Ma & Pa Kettle movies to watch... she loved them...
Cheers
@maple1232 Hi Chris, Thanks for putting me on to this film. Mr Keaton was some stunt man eh? Silent films with trains are my new obsession!!
@Jaidencharlotte I found the full film on YouTube while I was at school
It was a very enjoyable free period
@johnnyjames7139 Try to see it with a live musical accompaniment, preferably played on a theatre pipe organ. Theatre organist Gaylord Carter played this picture his entire career.

It’s a war movie, a love movie, a train movie, and a chase movie all in one!
What more could you ask for from what many consider to be the greatest silent movie ever made?
It’s Buster Keaton doing his own stunts in 1926’s “The General”, with nonstop comedy and drama as he saves his two true loves: his beloved locomotive, “The General”, and his girlfriend, Annabelle Lee.

On Saturday, June 2, 2018, Members of the Florida Orchestra performed Buster Keaton’s 1926 silent comedy classic “The General” at Tampa Theatre in celebration of the majestic movie palace’s recently completed restoration work, which returned portions of the historic landmark back to their original 1926 aesthetics.

I got curious:
This is why every cinema manager hated my guts. Because I had the audacity to point out this problem and because I offered to help. FOR FREE!!! That’s why I was not allowed back. That’s why I didn’t care to return, anyway.

(Kino K669, desaturated)
In 2014 Samuel H James was approached by Joel Ransom, an associate of the Kings Theatre, Southsea, Portsmouth, to create a contemporary score for one of Buster Keaton’s most celebrated works, ‘The General’ (1926). This was to feature as a major contribution to the ‘Making Waves Film Festival 2015’.
In order to achieve a dynamic range of instrumentation, Samuel invited Hana Spooner, classically trained in piano and violin, to collaborate on the project. Their unique partnership allowed an exciting new development to unfold - juxtaposing experimental sound with traditional techniques.
“Hana and I were inspired by the process of improvising music to complement the moving image, as had been employed in silent films during the 1920s. We felt that this approach encompassed a romantic ideology. Hana brought a playful lightness to the score which proved to be the perfect counterpoint to the discordant, experimental phrasing.” The completed works was premiered at the Kings Theatre in September 2015.
Hana Spooner: Upright Piano, Hammond,
Keyboard, Viola, Violin.
Samuel H James: Sound design, Foley, Clarinet, Soprano/Alto Saxophone, Hammond Keyboard, Electric Guitar, Electronic/Acoustic treatments and ‘other worldly’ sounds.

Ray The Tracer, Stencil Movie (black OR white): The General 1926 Buster Keaton
Feb 16, 2019, running time 1:15:38 (Kino K669)
What life looks like in black OR white ? You’ve seen color movies as well as B/W movies, but will your brain still work with zero shades of grey, when pixels can only be black or white ? Nothing on YouTube matched these criteria (basically “life in animated stencils”) so I did it, using this movie because it’s in the public domain (this video is not monetized BTW).
Lesson 1: Each frame must be “stencilized” individually, otherwise a scene will either be too black or too white (aka unwatchable). This adds a lot of compute time because you have to find the right threshold spot between black and white, by analyzing the whole picture beforehand.
Lesson 2: It works better with a B/W movie. I first tried using “Charade” (1963), a color movie, but somehow it wasn’t “enlightened” the way they did for B/W, and therefore the result wasn’t as convincing.
Lesson 3: The original work must be of good quality. A poor encoding will result in big squares on the screen. Not good.
Does it work ? Yes (TMHO). And to explain my humble opinion I must quote Wilhelm Worringer, a famous german art historian who stated that art is both “Abstraktion” (the spirit, the signified) and “Einfuhlung” (the empathy, the reality, the sign). In this case, “stencilizing” the movie preserves its mind without most of its body, retaining its “signified” without most of its signs. It is in fact the exact opposite of hyperrealism. But rather than “subrealism” I like to call it “hyperabstraction”. That’s just my opinion.

Top Documentary Films: The Real Buster Keaton
During the 1910s, popular comedy shorts preceded more esteemed features. By the 1920s, however, comedy developed into a mass-observed genre of feature lengths with stars like Buster Keaton and Charles Chaplin. Silent film, by just referring to its title, suggested a dependence on physical action-slapstick-for comedians. But this alone did not distinguish silent film comedy’s capabilities. Similar action, albeit with sound, had been performed on vaudeville stages and circus arenas. To this end, silent film needed to offer comedians something more to explain its durability with an abounding audience; although the aspect of mass-exhibition is a crucial one when considering the various medium-specific strategies offered to comedians.
A focus on the aforementioned performers’ careers offers an explanation as to how this relationship with not only the medium, but also the audience, affected their approach to silent film comedy. Through the analysis of Sherlock Jr. (1924), The Saphead (1920), and The Immigrant (1917), film evidently offered itself as a representational art form of time and space that could be manipulated to convey a complicated gag and a more sophisticated story. This was accomplished through the comedians’ use of medium-exclusive techniques as well as the development of a filmic persona that worked both for and against audience expectation.
Before any examination of what silent film specifically offered comedians occurs, one must first acknowledge cinema’s general contribution to performers as well as audiences. Before cinema, live performances such as circuses and music halls were the major venues for inexpensive entertainment (Bordwell 3). Yet because these performances were live, the constriction of time and space limited certain exhibition possibilities. For a specific performance, there was only one time and space to see it; there would evidently be a smaller crowd than that of a performance shown in various locations at multiple times.
(This should be called The Fake Buster Keaton. Almost totally wrong.)

PROJECT
With enormous effort we have been working on the live-stream for 6 weeks. Wings, hall, light, fog, cameras and technology are ready. So that life goes on. The industry is on a shutdown. This is not only an economic challenge for us artists, technicians, piano tuners, organizers and everyone around us. We have to make art. Otherwise we will go mad. That’s just the way it is. That’s why I’ve gathered this troupe. And so my live stream is both: art and confidence for the people at home, task and elixir of life for ourselves.

The biggest thanks go to the Youth Cultural Centre Pumpe, which supports the project very much.

We are currently experiencing the biggest social experiment of all times. Let us remain curious, watch in amazement and do our part to ensure that it will end as well as possible.

STEPHAN GRAF VON BOTHMER: Buster Keaton - THE GENERAL - in concert

Supporting film: THE EGG Stan Laurel Solofilm before he met Oliver Hardy Delicious!

The film is one of the most important comedies in the history of film and is based on a true story: The locomotive driver Johnnie Gray (Buster Keation) tries to win back “his” locomotive “General”, which was hijacked by northern spies, and at the same time the heart of his beloved ones. Of course with the most bizarre ideas.

The work was written at the height of Keaton’s fame and is considered one of the most expensive comedies of the silent movie era. The failure of the production with the audience and critics brought the end of Keaton’s financial and therefore also artistic independence. When his meanwhile forgotten silent movies were rediscovered at the end of the 1950’s, “The General” became the centre of attention. Since then, the film has ranked among the most important comedies of all time within the reception due to its stringent dramaturgy and ambitious image design.

Silent films of the early 1900s are products of a different era. Some may contain scenes or depictions presented in a light-hearted way that are interpreted today as racist, misogynistic, or culturally insensitive. Circle Cinema does not present these scenes as an endorsement, but from an historical film perspective. As Oklahoma is resettled land of Indigenous Peoples and with the upcoming centennial of the Tulsa Race Massacre, we feel it is important to see these scenes and hope that it may spark reflection and change towards many of the problematic aspects that are still prevalent today. @frullmusic Just watched this film for the first time! I’m guessing there are people out there who might consider it blasphemy to have the Hisaishi version be my first watch, but I adore his work and just couldn’t resist. Not to mention that this was the highest quality version I could find online; even the uploads on proper services like Amazon Prime are re-colored and whatnot. So, thanks for your upload! It really is an absolutely stellar movie and Hisaishi did really well with his score, probably one of the few modern composers who can actually tackle something like this without losing that certain traditional grandeur. Another thing I noticed is that he worked on this score at the same time he worked on Howl’s Moving Castle, and you can really tell; there are a lot of little melodic stylings and arrangement touches that are totally connected between the two.

@amberlantern9328 Oh my goodness this is probably the best score for this film that I’ve ever heard!!! It perfectly fits the movie!!! You sir have just uploaded my FAVORITE version as of just now!!

“An astounding feat of creative musicianship” wrote The New Yorker’s Alex Ross about pianist-composer Matan Porat’s musical improvisations to silent films. Porat joined us in our hall in January 2016 to perform a completely improvised original score accompanying a screening of the Buster Keaton silent movie Orson Welles called, “perhaps the greatest film ever made.” See the film and hear Porat’s extraordinary score—full of humor and tragedy and whimsy and imagination—in this premiere screening of that brilliant 2016 performance.

@0axel078 wow, this is great! been forever since i've seen this classic. and never with a live score.

@DamTheKid This sounds about a professional as an open mic comedian having to stretch for an hour with just five minutes of material

@DamTheKid Oh now look they went and hired a special boy to play piana

@DamTheKid Just wait until you realize that instead of a theme to the music he just reuses things in different keys

@DamTheKid Who is this on piano and why does he sound like a toddler playing with a newfound object before an adult comes to stop him???

@DamTheKid Is he missing fingers or does he have extra chromosomes???

@DamTheKid Why does it sound so bad and why were all the live comments talking about how the piano is the worst part of the video. Big fail

Buster Keaton’s “The General” presented by Cinemart and Darwin Entertainment Centre.

After a sold-out Darwin Festival show, Cinemart is back by popular demand with another live cinema experience, featuring silent film maestro Buster Keaton’s greatest work ‘The General’ played out on the big screen, accompanied by a live original jazz soundtrack by local trad-jazz ensemble The House That Jack Built.

This 1926 legendary action-filled comedy set during the Civil War, follows Buster Keaton as a railway engineer whose train ‘The General’ is stolen by Union spies behind Southern lines. When Keaton’s character steals back his train, aided by his well-meaning fiancée, and is pursued by a posse of irate Yankees, hilarious scenes unfold thanks to his amazing use of props, stunts, and the dimensions of the cinematic frame.

A film of epic scale with Keaton’s trademark physical comedy genius, The General is deservedly singled-out as one of the greatest works of Hollywood’s silent film era and a pioneer of the action genre of filmmaking.

Cinemart is dedicated to hosting unique screen arts events showcasing the work of local and independent filmmakers, artists and festivals in Darwin and the Northern Territory. Curated by local filmmaker Timothy Parish, Cinemart events include live music soundtracks, short film nights and special workshops for the local film industry.

Smiling Solstice Memories, Full movie: The General (1926) ft Buster Keaton [Colorized 50fps 4k]
Nov 27, 2020, running time 1:18:16 (Cohen)
The General (1926) ft Buster Keaton full movie in color and upscaled to 4k and interpolated to 50fps.
The General is a 1926 American silent comedy film released by United Artists. It was inspired by the Great Locomotive Chase, a true story of an event that occurred during the American Civil War. The story was adapted from the 1889 memoir The Great Locomotive Chase by William Pittenger. The film stars Buster Keaton who co-directed it with Clyde Bruckman.
At the time of its initial release, The General, an action-adventure-comedy made toward the end of the silent era, was not well received by critics and audiences, resulting in mediocre box office returns (about half a million dollars domestically, and approximately one million worldwide). Because of its then-huge budget ($750,000 supplied by Metro chief Joseph Schenck) and failure to turn a significant profit, Keaton lost his independence as a filmmaker and was forced into a restrictive deal with MGM.
In 1954 the film entered the public domain in the United States because its claimant did not renew its copyright registration in the 28th year after publication.[2]
The General has since been reevaluated, and is now often ranked among the greatest American films ever made. In 1989, it was selected by the Library of Congress to be included in the first class of films for preservation in the National Film Registry for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.

Not a video, but an audio podcast. Very odd. The background is based pretty much entirely on Marion Meade’s book, which is why pretty much every factual claim is in error. The three participants also misinterpret and misunderstand the films. I tried to leave a comment but it was too long to fit and I couldn’t figure out how to shorten it. Well, at least they liked the movies, and they did have some nice things to say. What’s more, there is still some fascinating stuff to listen to, especially 02:20:12, the interview with Gus Macmillan of the Blue Grassy Knoll. Oh how I wish they had pursued the copyright case in court. It would have been messy, but they would have won, since, yes, the films by then really were in the public domain, at least in the US, and, I would imagine, worldwide, too.

By early April 1862, the Civil War was already closing in on the South, but the trains still ran on time. When the Western & Atlantic Railroad’s Saturday morning run from Atlanta pulled into Big Shanty, Georgia, at 5:20 am, passengers had just 20 minutes for breakfast at Mr. and Mrs. George Lacy’s trackside hotel. Conductor William Fuller and engineer E. Jefferson Cain, however, had barely paid their two bits and sat down to their grits and eggs when their locomotive, The General, let out a chuff of steam and began to move. Their guest at the table, W&A foreman Anthony Murphy, shouted, “Someone is running off with your train!” Everyone bolted out of the door, too late to stop the unscheduled departure.
Fuller’s first thought was that Confederate deserters from a militia camp just across the tracks were making an escape and would likely abandon his train as soon as it ran out of steam. A train conductor, though, is the captain of his ship. A deserted, powerless locomotive blocking the way and causing tie-ups up and down the only rail line north to Chattanooga would be on Fuller’s head. “I must follow as fast as possible,” he recalled thinking, “and try to get it back before I get very badly out of time.”
Fuller was only partly wrong. It was not a handful of deserters who had stolen his train, but rather a team of 20 Federal soldiers led by a Northern spy, James Andrews. And the raiders did not plan to abandon the locomotive before they cut Tennessee off from Georgia by burning every railroad bridge between Atlanta and Chattanooga. Fuller was correct, however, in knowing that The General would quickly run out of steam—as the raiders soon learned to their distress when, a short distance out of the station, the locomotive abruptly lost power, slowed, and stopped dead on the tracks. Corporal William Pittenger, one of the raiders riding in the three boxcars stolen along with the engine, recalled the moment. “We were to have serious trouble at the outset,” he wrote later. “There had been just one burst of speed, and then this sickening and alarming failure of power.” They could only sit there, in the heart of the Confederacy, and wait for their would-be engineers to figure out the trouble.
The Andrews raiders were not train experts—they were barely soldiers. A week earlier their leader had been a mere smuggler, taking black market goods south and information north. His volunteers were ordinary infantrymen chosen almost at random from Brig. Gen. Ormsby Mitchel’s 3rd Division of the Army of the Ohio. Only four had ever worked on a railroad; few had any experience of subterfuge, sabotage, or combat.

Poor Film Made Rich First Night, The General, BFI 35mm, Frodingham Parish Hall, St. Lawrence’s Church, Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph (England), Sat, 24 Sep 1955, Page 3. An earlier Scunthorpe Film Society had formed on Mon, 13 May 1935, with Mr W. A. Taylor as chairman. By June 1936 it was in financial difficulties. By February 1939 came plans for a new Cine Society. The next we hear about this is in September 1947, when the old film society is made available. Probably nothing happened. Then Mrs. Mary A. Gregory, wife and mother of three (soon five), moved to town from London and formed a fresh Scunthorpe Film Society in the autumn of 1951, with screenings at Chamber of Trade Hall, Belgrave-Square. First year ran at a profit. By September 1952 it was a member of the Federation of Film Societies. Membership Secretary Mr P. G. Sanders. Chairman John McGowan. Feb 1953 screenings move to Frodingham Parish Hall, St. Lawrence’s Church, Church-Lane. In 1953 it ran at a loss, needed 20 more members to break even. By 11 May 1954, expected deficit £3 10s. Mr. F. Perkins, presiding upon McGowan’s departure. Re-elected: Mr & Mrs S. Gregory, Mr. P. G. Sanders, Mr and Mrs F. Perkins, Mrs. W. Jackson, with the addition of Mr. Ian Fielding and Mr S. Craddock. Mary Gregory, Honourable Secretary, 10 Cliff Gardens. Mrs Gregory founded film society. By 1961 screenings are at the Civic Theatre. 1968/1969 seems to be the final season.

This was the first time I saw this movie and I was terribly disappointed. I guess what ruined it for me was the soundtrack, which was vibraphone accompaniment. I have no memory of who the distributor was. If you know who scored College with a solo vibraphone, please let me know. Thanks!

The first time I saw Steamboat Bill, Jr., was in the early 1980’s on Albuquerque KNME/5. It was part of a PBS series called “Sprockets.” Time to look it up. It played on Saturday, 19 March 1983, but at 11:00 at night. That’s not how I remember it. I remember watching it in the morning, probably on a Saturday morning. Well, it was repeated on Saturday Saturday, 26 March 1983, at 8:00 in the morning. That sounds more like it! It played again on Saturday, 8 October 1983, at 11:30 at night, but I’m pretty sure I was working that night. Then it was repeated yet again on Saturday, 15 October 1983, again at 8:00 in the morning, but I’m pretty sure I worked late the night before and would have been in no condition to wake up in time to catch this broadcast. So I bet I saw it on Saturday, 26 March 1983, and I thought it was just grand. It could not possibly have been the Rohauer edition, and so it must have been the Killiam 16mm edition.
